Frequently asked questions
How do we check that a supplier has F-tax and is registered for VAT?
Skatteverket's e-service Hämta företagsinformation shows whether a company is approved for F-tax and registered for VAT and as an employer, one company at a time. Central and local government authorities can ask about several companies at once through E-transport (Skatteverket, read 2026-10-27). For many suppliers in a system, SCB's free API for the business register has the same registrations. Read the guide to organisation numbers, F-tax and VAT (in Swedish).
How do you check whether a company is legitimate?
Start with what can be checked in public registers. Bolagsverket shows for free whether the company is registered, where its registered office is and whether it has a status such as bankruptcy or liquidation, and Skatteverket shows whether it has F-tax, VAT and is registered as an employer (read 2026-10-27). Also check that the person you negotiate with may sign for the company and that its annual reports have been filed. The registers say nothing about whether the company can pay its debts. Who may sign agreements for a Swedish limited company?
The whole board together may always sign, and a managing director may sign in matters that belong to the day-to-day management. The board can also appoint special signatories, for example two members jointly, and this is registered with Bolagsverket (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). How do I see who sits on a company's board?
The board is public but not free at Bolagsverket. In the e-service Sök företagsinformation you buy the information on persons in the company or a certificate of registration, and in Bolagsverket's paid API you fetch it by machine (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). Where can I find free information about a company?
Bolagsverket's Sök företagsinformation shows for free, among other things, status, address, registered office and registration date, and Skatteverket's Hämta företagsinformation shows F-tax, VAT and employer registration (read 2026-10-27). Digitally filed annual reports are also free. The board, signatories and certificates of registration cost money. Bolagsverket's Sök företagsinformation (in Swedish).
Are annual reports public, and how do you get them?
Yes. Almost everything registered with Bolagsverket is public, annual reports included (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). You buy single annual reports in Sök företagsinformation. Those filed digitally are free in Bolagsverket's API and weekly files for high-value datasets, but scanned annual reports are not included there. Read the guide to annual reports (in Swedish).
Does Bolagsverket have an API, and what does it cost?
Yes, two. The API for high-value datasets is free and needs no agreement, but lacks the board and signatories among other things. The API for company information has them and costs SEK 5,000 to connect and SEK 1,000 to 24,000 a month for 500 to 15,000 transactions, excluding VAT (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). Is there a free API for Swedish company data?
Yes, two. Bolagsverket's API for high-value datasets gives basic data and digitally filed annual reports, and SCB's API for the business register gives industry, workplaces and number of employees in size classes (Bolagsverket and SCB, read 2026-10-27). Among the authorities' APIs, the board, signatories and history are only in Bolagsverket's paid one. GET /bolag brings both authorities' data together in one API. How do we keep our customer register up to date when companies change address, name or board?
Bolagsverket can send notifications of changes to your system. They are included at no extra cost in the paid API from the level of 3,000 transactions a month (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). Without an agreement you can compare against Bolagsverket's free file of all organisations, updated every week, or buy SCB's notifications of changes. How do we get industry, size and number of employees into our CRM?
SCB's business register has the industry (SNI code), workplaces and number of employees in size classes for every company, and the API has been free since 26 June 2025 (SCB, read 2026-10-27). You need a personal API key, and each call returns at most 5,000 rows. Turnover is in the annual reports. Read SCB's business register via API explained (in Swedish).
How do I find a company's parent company and subsidiaries?
There is no register of groups. Bolagsverket does not register who owns shares, and the share register is kept by the company itself (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). The group shows instead in the annual reports, for example in the consolidated accounts, and those filed digitally are free to fetch. Read the guide to group structure (in Swedish).
Can you see who was on the board on a given date?
Yes. In Bolagsverket's paid API you can send a point in time and get the information that applied then, for example the board and the signatories (Bolagsverket, read 2026-10-27). Bolagsverket's free API and SCB's API have no history. Read the guide to history and changes (in Swedish).
